The Competition Evolves
Miss America has a 100-year history of looking ahead. The competition’s inception as a “bathing beauty review” was an act of rebellion during a time when women weren’t permitted to wear swimsuits in public. In 1945, the organization started awarding scholarships to the winner instead of prize money, making Miss America one of the first organizations in the United States to offer college scholarships to women. In the 80s, Miss America Organization officially made community service a pillar of the program, helping to raise awareness, and millions of dollars, for worthy causes.
Continued Progress
The Miss America opportunity continues to evolve to better serve the women in our program and the communities in which they live. Throughout the competition and in interviews, delegates have the opportunity to connect with the judges, showcase their community service initiatives, and demonstrate how they are uniquely qualified for the exciting 365-day opportunity of being Miss America.
With the advent of the new Miss America ownership, we’re expanding our programs for women to include professional partnerships with notable philanthropic partners, career advancement, and Little Sister mentorship. We will continue to build on the brand legacy started a century ago, helping to educate and prepare thousands of women in our country to pursue their goals.
Preparing for the stage…
and beyond
So much happens behind the scenes. Delegates engage in an exciting range of activities that include local and state appearances, riding inparades, fundraising for various charities, representing their respective communities and supporting their passions. These women join an incredible sisterhood of former winners who are movers and mentors in every field. It’s an exciting time. And the sisterhood created between delegates lead to lifelong friendships.
